Tunnel Canyon

We took Pooka out for a little hike last Sunday. We ended up in a place called Tunnel Canyon, called such for good reason as you can tell from the photo. We had never been there before and it was nice. Pooka loved it so much that she wasn't still enough to take a photo of. Everywhere we stopped had the friendly reminders that it was bear country, like we are likely to forget that.

That's my sort of place to go walking, althouhg, I'm not too sure about the bears. Sounds as if Pooka enjoyed it.

Pooka is wild about hiking in the mountains. It is her favorite thing to do. I think she would even pass up food for it.

I have been hiking and camping in the mountains of NM and Colorado my entire life and never once have I seen a bear, even though there are always those warnings. However one night this summer we were walking Pooka on the trail directly behind our house and I caught sight of a large black shape running away from us. It wasn't much more than 12 feet away when it crossed the path running. I didn't get a good look at it and at first thought it was probably a raccoon. Then Pooka went to smell where it had been and instead of following the smell and chasing it like she would a raccoon she came straight home. That is when it occurred to me that it was really quite a bit too large to have been a raccoon and I didn't at all blame Pooka for not wanting to chase it.
