Sad but not uncommon

Saturday when we went to my nephews birthday party we met these two adorable cats. My niece and her husband rent a mobile home and these cats had been living beneath it. They feed them whenever possible, but they are both without a job right now and have two children to support. Yesterday (mother's day) one of the cats had 5 kittens and the other one is in labor according to Jayme. I am trying to find a rescue group to take them, but there are none I can find where she lives in the Belen/Valencia county area. I have contacted PACA, which is the group I adopted one of my cats from. Obviously, Jayme does not want to call animal control because we know these cats and kittens would end up being killed. Valencia County is a poor county and their animal services are overwhelmed.

Overwhelmed because of situations like this. Situation where some asshole adopted a cat, didn't get it fixed and then simply moved out leaving it behind, these are kittens of previous cats that animal control "cleared out" that are now having their own kittens. They suffer and these tiny babies suffer too:

As you can see I am a well behaved cat. I stick to hanging out around the door, often under the bush in the trenches Pooka (the dog) has dug for us all. Khan, on the other hand wanders:

My Humom has to follow him around, making sure that he doesn't get into trouble or become harmed. He thinks he is hunting, but he is just a baby. Unlike me, he doesn't know the first thing about hunting or he would know that you hide under the bush and await your opportunity.

People - please keep your pets indoors or somewhere very secure. Last 4th of July we went out around 9 pm to grab some food and there was a poor Golden Retriever roaming the streets. I watched in horror as it ran out in front of a car and was hit. Luckily, it was not actually ran over because the driver saw it in time to slam on her brakes and it seemed to be OK. She was also a nice person that immediately pulled over and went to help the dog, but not all are that lucky.

Save a bear -- keep idiots out of the wilderness!

Yesterday it was reported that a woman who was camping in the Sandia mountains was attacked by a bear and drug out of her tent. She managed to free herself by punching the bear in the nose and from my understanding was not seriously injured. This immediately was strange to me because there is no camping allowed in the Sandia mountains and there are signs all over telling you that it is for picnics only and listing the times the area is closed. As it turns out, I was right no camping was allowed, but that isn't the thing that makes these people (there was a man too) idiots -- the reason the bear tore open the tent was because they had food in it! Thanks to these idiots the bear was shot dead (which is what happens to bears that attack humans for any reason) and their dog is also dead having been killed by the bear. These assholes are getting off with only being charged with improper food storage, even though they were camping somewhere that camping is not allowed and caused two deaths. It makes me think that people need to pass some sort of test before they are allowed to leave the city and spend the night in the mountains, even in a real camping area. Properly storing your food is camping 101, it isn't some advanced knowledge and most 6 year olds even know that.

Sorry for the rant, it just really made me angry.

I still let the cats sit outside with me during the day, but not by themselves or at night. Yesterday, Khan had a blast stalking and chasing a lizard.

Huge Bobcat Sighting

Earlier today we took Pooka and went up into the mountains to scatter my sister Becky's ashes. We went late, around 7pm, so there wouldn't be people around. As we turned into the area know as Sulphur Canyon, we saw the biggest Bobcat that either of us have ever seen. He crossed right in front of our car, went into the tree area and stopped, turned around and stared at us. He was at least twice the size of the Bobcats I have seen around here where I live and twice as big as other ones I have seen in captivity. At the time I estimated he must weigh 60 lbs, which might be an overestimate, but it had to be at least 50. Of course, I hadn't even got my camera out of my bag yet and I knew he would probably be gone by the time I did, so the photo isn't mine. I had always thought that even a large Bobcat was around 30 lbs, but I found this quote:

Mountain lions average between 75 and 150 lbs, while bobcats average between 15 and 30 lbs. However, an exceptionally large male bobcat can be close in size to a small female cougar.

I was thrilled to have seen it! Totally made my day!

I went to a park in the city!

Yesterday just me and my mom went bye-bye. She took me into the city and to a city park. It was so much fun! We go for walks here, but it is the smell of the same old dogs (and coyotes) every day - there were hundreds maybe thousands of dog smells in that park! I peed on so many things that I had no pee left, but I kept trying. Anyhow we had a very fun time and I hope we get to go again soon!

So perhaps it won't come as a huge surprise to learn that a 70-mph gust of wind was able to sweep the little girl off her feet. That's precisely what happened to her in April while she was minding her own business at a Michigan flea market.

What may come as more of a surprise is that Tinker Bell flew completely out of the sight of her owners, Dorothy and Lavern Utley, who turned to a pet psychic for help. They said the psychic directed them to a wooded spot almost a mile away from the flea market -- and, what do you know? There was Tinker Bell! After two days on her own, she was hungry and dirty but otherwise fine. Dorothy Utley said the little dog "just went wild" when she saw Utley.

Cat Sitter, Kanga and TV

Many years ago, I bought a video called Cat Sitter. You can see it on youtube here. I have had 4 cats in that time and Kanga is the only one that REALLY likes it.

Kanga likes a lot of TV. Her favorites are kiddie cartoons with silly noises, animal shows (especially the dog shows), French speaking movies and anything with good music. Kanga is the only pet I have ever had that pays any attention to TV. Don't get me wrong, she knows what is on there isn't real, but she enjoys watching or listening -- depending what is on. Right now she is watching pet sitter and totally into it.

Although I still miss my friend James Bond - I love my new friend Khan! Since he isn't allowed outside I get to spend much more time with him and we are already very good friends. He also has learned about how I need to have my ears cleaned and head rubbed right before dinner! I didn't think anyone could replace James Bond, but he is totally awesome!

He had to learn some things though. Like we don't share food bowls here, everyone has their own. Pooka is not a giant cat and you CAN'T share her food bowl ever! He has handled all his learning well and is now part of the family.

I think he sucks up to mom and especially dad a bit too much, but whatever. He is always laying on their silk comforter like it is his. Though, he is a baby, only four years old, so I overlook these things as much as possible. I try to instruct him on how things are suppose to be, but he doesn't always listen. That is how children are, sometimes they just have to find out for themselves -- like about Pooka not sharing her food.

Overall though, he is very smart and fun to hang out with. James Bond was like a really cool older brother that didn't let me spend much time with him, but Khan is a little brother who looks up to me and that is fun and different.

Hello! My name is Khan and I am the new guy here. I will be 4 years old in Dec and I am a Siamese/Tonkinese. My previous owner had to move back to England and could not take me with him, so I was put up for adoption. I was at the adoption place for several weeks and I am very happy to finally have a new home!

Everyone here already loves me very much! Even Kanga and Pooka. I had never been around a dog before, but Pooka is really a big sweetie and I made friends with her right away. Kanga took a couple days, but now we are really good friends. She was very lonely after her friend James Bond died, but not anymore.

My new mom says that I am hard to take photos of because I am never still unless I am asleep and even then I wake up and move when she is trying to take a photo. :) These are the few she has managed to get so far.

I am sure I will have more to say in the future. Nice to meet everyone!

The top photo was taken by PACA. I haven't been able to get a good photo yet because he is too busy exploring to hold still. His name is Khan (I probably won't change it) and he is almost 4 years old. You can't tell from the photos but he has beautiful blue eyes. He is unlike any cat I have ever brought home. First, it was like he knew that he was suppose to go home with me, he walked right into the crate when it was time to leave the shelter. The lady that helped with the adoption told me that she had never seen a cat do that. They normally hide for at least two days when you get them home, but he immediately started exploring the house. He had never been around a dog, but seems perfectly OK with Pooka. He is happy in the same room as her, but keeps a bit of distance and a watchful eye.

Kanga hasn't decided if he is safe yet, but she is very curious and watching his every move. He is trying hard to make friends with her, but so far she hisses if he gets too close. May take a day or two for her to totally warm up to him, but I am sure she will.

He is just the friendliest little guy! I am so happy that I found him after my disappointment with not being allowed to adopt that other cat earlier in the week because I had a dog. So probably that happened for a reason and this was the cat I was actually suppose to have.

Last Friday or Saturday night I browsed the local animal humane website in search of a new companion for Kanga and all of us. There was only one that really fit what I was looking for. He was male, 5 1/2 years old and in many ways just so perfect to replace the male energy that was lost with James Bond. All the rest of the cats on the site were way younger than I was looking for, mostly kittens. Not that I have anything against kittens, but I am just not sure a kitten would be the best type of friend for Kanga who will be 8 years next month.

So earlier today I went to meet and adopt him, assuming that all went well. All did go well (to a point), even though the site said he was shy, he warmed right up to me. If fact, the moment he saw me he came to his cage door and wanted petted -- he was the only cat that did that. I was instantly in love and ready to take him home until I mentioned that I had a dog. Apparently one of the workers walked a dog by his cage and he hissed at it and therefore he is not allowed to be adopted by someone with a dog. So I came home empty handed and heart broken.

Maybe I am crazy, but isn't that natural for cats to not like dogs right way? I know that when we got Bond he was terrified of Pooka for probably a week or two, but after that he got over it and they became really good friends. It seems to me that only a stupid cat would like a dog right away without knowing it.

I have some mixed feelings because I know they are trying to adopt pets to the best homes for them so they don't end up coming back, but at the same time a cat not liking a dog seems totally normal to me.

Still upset about it (big baby me even cried) and I did email telling them to please consider me if they for some reason can't find that cat a home.

However much I am still in fear of getting another cat because of the bobcat, it seems I have no choice.

Kanga is missing James Bond entirely too much still. She cries at her food bowl way too much. It isn't because she is hungry, most times she has just eaten. You see, she used to call him to dinner that way and he would come and lick her head and clean her ears while I was getting the food. She tries to get Pooka to substitute for Bond, but Pooka knows nothing about licking and cleaning her ears and she bugs Pooka so much that I am afraid she is eventually going to get bit. So far though, Pooka has been very patient with her.

So I am thinking Monday I will head down to Animal Humane and get a cat. I have come up with a few requirements that hopefully will make it easier for me to choose. It has to be a male cat (the pets are missing that male energy), can't be declawed, I would also like it to not be a kitten and maybe an older cat close to Kanga's age (Kanga is almost 8), like Bond was. I am also hoping to get an indoor cat, one that is not used to going out at all because I still really worry about the bobcat.

I am hoping that aside from helping Kanga it will help the rest of us to heal too. I still can't walk by his grave without crying and it has been over a month. Britton also still obsesses over it, obviously Kanga and even Pooka obviously misses him, he was part of her dog pack even though he was a cat. Pooka won't go near the spot where she found him, it seems to really upset her.

So hopefully Monday we will all have a new friend!

This is the last photo my mom took of me and James Bond together. I miss him so much! I am not sure exactly what happened to him, but I know he is gone and it had something to do with a Bobcat. I don't think there is any cat that I can't take, but if it got my big brother, maybe I am wrong because he was as tough as I am. I know my peeps are afraid to let me out so I have been good and not begging to go out. I have been sad and like sleep close to Mr. B's stuff. Everyone is extra nice to me, but that doesn't keep me from missing him. I know that mom, dad and Pooka miss him as much as I do. It is very hard, but with love we will all get through it.

Good bye my friend! I miss your kisses, cleaning my head and ears, when we used to play chase and just hanging out. I will not forget you!

Here at Animal Humane our pet celebrities receive the Red Carpet treatment everyday.The cats and dogs housed at by Animal Humane | New Mexico are considered VIP's during their stay. The staff and volunteers care for every pet from the moment they first come through our doors until the precious day that they leave with their new families.The stray, abandoned and surrendered pets at Animal Humane are photographed before they are groomed and receive their accommodations. To be able to do our job and find loving homes for these celebrities, it takes money. As a private, non-profit organization, we don’t receive city or state funding. We depend on supporters like you to help us continue to roll out the red carpet for our pets.

Biologists return endangered falcons to NM

The last place the rare northern aplomado falcon was known to nest before disappearing from the United States more than a half century ago was a grassy plain in southwestern New Mexico.

Through a reintroduction program, the falcon is returning to the grasslands near Deming.

Biologists placed four captive-bred falcons inside a large wooden box several feet above the desert floor today so they can get acclimated to their new home.

In a few days, the door on the box will be opened and the 35-day-old falcons will get to stretch their wings. The release is the first of many planned this year by The Peregrine Fund.

The group has been working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other state and federal agencies over the past decade to reintroduce the falcon in Texas and New Mexico.

What a great race and I was thrilled that Mine that Bird won!

I do realize there are a lot of animal rights people that think horse racing is animal cruelty. While I totally agree that drugging or any abuse of a horse is totally wrong that is a separate issue from just racing. There are people that think the racing part is cruel and all I can say is that those people have never been around race horses or they would realize that they love to race. Like herding dogs love to herd, it is their natural instinct. Horse racing is a beautiful sport, but as with anything involving animals -- abuse must be taken seriously and punished.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Mine That Bird dug up a miracle, stunning the field to win the Kentucky Derby with a dynamic stretch run through the mud at Churchill Downs.
The 3-year-old colt and jockey Calvin Borel found room along the rail deep in the stretch Saturday then pulled away to give the 50-1 long shot one of the biggest upsets in the 135-year history of the race.

The win was the second Derby victory in three years for Borel, who used a similar stretch run to send Street Sense to the winner's circle in 2007.

Pioneerof the Nile held off Musket Man for second, but neither were a match for the unheralded colt from New Mexico.

More than 600 dogs and cats were adopted this weekend

The City of Albuquerque is looking at a potential world record as hundreds of pets were adopted at this weekend's Fetchapalooza.

The two-day event at Journal Center wrapped up Sunday afternoon at five.

Officials say a total of 630 out of 670 animals were adopted.

That's a city and state record—but it could also be a world record. The city will contact the Guinness Book of World Records to check it out.

Participating in Fetchapalooza were 38 shelters and rescue groups from around the state.

Organizers say Fetchapalooza will be back next year.

A man was arrested in Albuquerque over the weekend for attacking a dog and throwing it into the air.

Witnesses say Mesa Moquino, 29, picked up a puppy at the bus stop at San Mateo and Kathryn and started shaking it. They say he threw the dog 15 feet up and it landed on top of the bus shelter.

Bystanders who stepped in to help the dog got into an argument with Moquino, who tried to get in a fight with them.

Officers were called in and arrested the man.

Adopt a dog or cat at an Albuquerque event this weekend and the Alliance for Albuquerque Animals will pay your adoption fees.

The group is hosting Fetchapalooza at Journal Center on Saturday and Sunday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They say it's the biggest pet adoption event in the state.

The alliance is offering to take care of the adoption fees for any animal over 5 years old. The dogs and cats at Fetchapalooza come from shelters across the city and are already chipped, spayed or neutered and are eligible for a free checkup.

I can't really blame him.

A Bernalillo County animal control worker is in trouble after he admitted to breaking into an animal shelter to get his dog back.

Albuquerque police say late last Thursday night, Larry Lucero broke into the West Side animal shelter to get back his Yorkshire terrier that had run away.

Police say surveillance cameras caught Lucero in the act. They say he was even driving his county-issued truck.

Police say he broke in because he didn't want to deal with the paperwork and procedures required to get a dog back.

"It is a little ironic from the aspect that working for a county facility and dealing with animal control issues, one should know the proper protocols that take place," said John Walsh of the Albuquerque Police Department.

Lucero has not been arrested or charged.

The district attorney's office is deciding on what charges to file.

County officials say Lucero is on paid administrative leave. They also plan to do their own internal investigation.

Crocodiles, more exactly man-eating crocodiles have been in the news lately. Recently, an Australian girl was killed by a crocodile whilst swimming in a lagoon in the Black Jungle Conservation Reserve. This is a wildlife reserve known to be inhabited by crocodiles. Who's fault is this, the crocodile for being a crocodile? Or the people for being stupid enough to swim in an area which is supposedly strictly access controlled?
As far as we are concerned, to allow one's eleven year old child, together with other children to wander, and worse to swim, in a place whose very existence is to conserve potentially lethal predators is nothing less than child abuse.

But the public don't see that.
Recently an Indo-Pacific crocodile, estimated to be a titanic thirty feet long killed a girl. She was on her way to a floating school on the Agusan Marsh in the Philippines. The reaction of the public was both hysterical and stupid, recalling the torch-bearing mobs of peasants in Hammer films.

What a stupid law. I am glad it didn't pass! You can't pick out certain breeds, that is ridiculous. It isn't the breed, it is the owner. Even then it isn't necessarily that they mistreat their dogs, just that they don't teach boundaries or don't know to -- believe me, I know of what I speak. You have to teach a dog that kind of behavior is wrong which is hard to do if the right circumstance doesn't present itself very often. However, otherwise they don't know not to snap at a stranger that gets too close to their food bowl and it just isn't their fault that they don't know that and it has nothing to do with what breed they are.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The House has rejected a proposal that would have required owners of dangerous dogs to obtain liability insurance to cover damages or injuries caused by the animals.
The legislation would have updated a law enacted in 2005 to protect New Mexicans from dogs determined to be dangerous or potentially dangerous.
Opponents objected to a proposal that would have forced owners of dangerous dogs to have $100,000 worth of liability insurance. They expressed doubts that some owners would buy the insurance coverage.
Supporters said dog owners should be held liable for the actions of their animals.
Republican Representative Kathy McCoy of Cedar Crest said the legislation would send a message to irresponsible animal owners that they must take responsibility for dangerous dogs.
